Week 27- Y2- Little woman audition week!

24/03/23

We learnt about etiquette today. As a warm up we got into groups and had to walk with a book on our head, and see who could walk back to the group the fastest without dropping the book off their head. Afterwards we had to get into groups off 7 of just girls, and the same with the boys. We all got given a sheet of paper which explained how an etiquette lady would act and the boys had one for males. I actually learnt a lot, like:
- A lady must not cross her legs when sitting
-Her feet must be flat to the group when sat
-Her hands should be on her lap when sat unless kitting or sewing.
-A lady must not touch her hair or twirl her curls.
-A lady should leave food on the plate to make it look like she has a small and cute appetite
-A lady mustn't take wine when offered and pretend to drink it from an empty cup.
-If they need to cough or sneeze they must excuse themselves and enter an empty room to do so
-Lady's are not allowed to talk to men without covering their face with a veil
-If they are in a carriage and a man is in there with them they are not allowed to make eye contact
-They must call men by their surname and Mr in the front
Overall the rules back then were very strict and women were hardly allowed to do anything, which allows us to understand why the March family is very different. We had to make something to show these rules to the class, so my group made a presentation. We'll probably perform them on Wednesday.

Audition day! I think that this is the most unprepared I have been for an audition. It's the most I have done my research on, but just in general I feel like there was more that I could do. I'd say that I should have done more analysis on the script. I was struggling so hard to find a monologue for Amy. She doesn't have any big enough monologues throughout the whole script. All the people going for Amy were all panicking a little because neither of us could find a good piece to show for tomorrow. Luckily one of them asked Kelly, and she then sent some duologues from the book. I choose the one where Amy is arguing with Laurie because he is drunk. I do actually really hope that this gets added to the script because it's a good scene. I learnt it and was really confident in my lines. I had already written a monologue through the weekend and learnt it so that was good. I'll write it down here:
"I'm not like you Jo. I can't just leave everything behind. Apparently I have to take care of the family now. I'll marry rich. It's not like I can make my own money. Certainly not enough to help support my family. Were just woman. Aunt March has already lectured me about needing to marry well. I've always known that I'd marry but....I don't know...... Meg's found Mr Brooke, Beth is unwell and you, well, you and I both know nothing will ever make you marry. It's something that you never took interest in. You're a fantastic writer Jo, and you should go and pursue that, but don't tell me to go do what I want most, because you and I know that that's not possible. I'll marry Fred. He's rich, and he'll be able to support us."
Talking about how the audition went overall, I'd say quite terrible. My worst audition that I have ever done. I forgot my lines. I literally forgot the last sentence so I was quite annoyed with myself. I think that, that then messed me up because I forgot the whole thing again when I tried to restart. The third time I had to use the script which was annoying, because I felt like I couldn't fully show the character and her personality. One thing I do think went well was how I presented my lines. I said it in the right tone and showed the right emotions. I do think that I could have done A LOT better, but I'm not going to feel sorry for myself. Of course I'll be upset if I don't get the part, but whatever I get I'll work hard on that. We then as Amy's did a chemistry read with a Laurie. I partnered up with Aiden (Going for Laurie). I think that this had gone pretty well. Once again it could have gone better, but I think that there was chemistry there. Tomorrow there will be more chemistry reads so I'll put more work and effort in.

We did infant do our little presentations on etiquette today. The girls all had the same information as us but what I learnt from the boys were:
-They must offer a girl their umbrella if it's raining outside, and then accompany her home.
-They must wait for a woman or elderly person to walk by
-If there is a puddle they must place their coat on top and help the woman or elderly person over.
-When a woman walks in the room they must stand up and offer their seat if they are sat
-When a woman stands up they should also stand and bow then open the door for them
-They are only allowed to smoke at nightfall, as it's very unattractive to a woman
Now that we all know these things, we have to take it into consideration when acting. All these mannerisms were important back then so the characters in little women would display them.
We then had a dancing class with Tom. This was great and it was good to see who we all work well with. I got paired up with Morgan and I feel like we did pretty well, we maintained eye contact and didn't forget the dance. I didn't feel awkward with him which was good. Some people did some chemistry reads but I didn't today. Chemistry in this show is such a big thing as it's got a lot of romance in it. It's a love story. I thought about my chemistry read yesterday and I realised that there were a few things that could have gone better. It was our first time running through it so it wasn't going to be perfect, but Laurie and Amy have that weird bond where they do
love each other, I feel like we didn't show that to the fullest. More contact would have been better. I made sure to maintain eye contact but I was also reading from the script. I also tried to stay close but once again I could have been even closer.

The girls all got grouped up with the other sisters, so that we could rehearse and show Kelly a piece. It was where they do a scene from Jo's writing/ play. I was in a group with Millie T, who played Jo, Freya who played Meg and then Alayah who played Beth. It was quite a difficult scene to actually get my head around. There's a lot of stage directions, and a lot is happening at once. We ran through it a couple of times and eventually we were quite happy with it. When we showed Kelly is was shaking so bad, I could hardly read my script because it was going all over the place. Kelly told us to make it even more dramatic, because they can't actually act except from Meg. My character Amy has a lot of lines in it, and you can tell her personality from it. Very sassy and arrogant. With that attitude it scares Jo, and it all slightly kicks off, which really shows the sisters relationships. That's why Kelly wanted us to do this scene. Too see who has chemistry with who, so that she can cast the right groups of sisters. Kelly then proceeded to tell us that we would have to perform this in front of the whole class at the end of the day, which panicked me a little. Afterwards we got told who we were going to do a chemistry with the love interest for our characters. I got put with Callum who is going for Laurie. We got given a new scene from the book, which I really enjoyed. It's where Laurie comes back for Amy. I learnt my lines and so did he during rehearsals, this allowed us to fully focus on our actions. It really helped knowing our lines. Of course the main thing we focused on was to make it seem like were in love. A lot of physical touch like hand holding and touching each others cheeks. Doing it in front of the class went really well i think. I feel like these chemistry reads today have helped to distract my bad performance on Monday.
