Week 9-Y2, Wizard of Oz rehearsals

First day of proper rehearsals as Dorothy! Today we ran a little bit through the scene where Dorothy wakes up in Kansas and meets Belinda and the Munchkins. In this scene I'd say that Dorothy is a bit upset but seeing Belinda makes her happy because of how fulfilling and calming her presence is. Dorothy's kindness and curiosity comes into it again, which then shows Dorothy not being afraid of the Munchkins and more excited to meet them. We went through all three casts. I'd say that we worked more on the Munchkins and what they do more than what Belinda and Dorothy do. The Munchkins will appear just like they did the last time we rehearsed it. Today we added a bit more movement, and we as Munchkins began reacting, of what Belinda says, e.g. when she says that everyone loves her we all make love hearts.

Today we spent all day long working on our Munchkin characters. We are working so hard on these because if the Munchkins are boring and don't have any characterisation it will completely make the whole scene miserable, and it will catch the audiences eye in a bad way. We first started talking like Munchkins. I just did a super american accent and made it super squeaky. We then began playing duck duck goose in our Munchkin characters. It was actually really funny because we all have different munchkins. Some are super young and some are super old.

Today we did some rehearsals in the theatre. We ran through the very first scene and then onto when the Wicked witch of the west came and threatened to get Dorothy. I think that rehearsals are going really well! Afterwards we began working on the Munchkin chant as we were finding it difficult. Tom came to help us to add rhythm to it as before it was more of a 'chant'- It was great to experiment with it!

Today we really focused on bringing the Scarecrow, Tin-man and Lion into the picture. We looked into the physicality of the Scarecrow and Tin-man. They are very cartoony characters. We made the Scarecrow very dozy and flexible, always folding over because he has no bones and is made out of straw. The Tin-man is made out of really heavy tin, so every step he takes is a struggle and also moves quite robotic because he gets very rusty. Here is a short video of another little rhythm thing that we did!
One thing I'm struggling with is learning my lines which is really frustrating me since I want to get rid of the script and focus on the movements etc. I will be working hard on learning as much as I can.
