Location, Time period and Accent for Blood Brothers

 Location:

Blood Brothers is set in Liverpool. The 1950's were a turning point in the history of Liverpool's urban fabric. It had marked a point just before some of the most wide-ranging changes the city had ever seen. The second world war and the Blitzkrieg air raids of the early 1940's devastated the Liverpool landscape. Buildings were so damaged to the point where they couldn't be repaired and fires gutted what the bombs left behind. Liverpool was very well known as a good industry port. It became one of the world's largest trading industries during those times. This industry has helped it develop from a fishing town to an amazing industry where people around the Uk liked to go to. In the 1960's Liverpool became home to one of the city's most famous exports the Beatles. This was thanks to the cavern club that opened in 1957! Since it was the home of the Beatles, it helped to attract a lot of tourism, which of course helped the industry.

Time period:

Blood Brothers is set in the 1950's to the 1970's. Back then Liverpool was a lot more different. Like I said above there was a war which led to buildings being destroyed and the land being flat. But with the help of time, these problems were fixed. Liverpool used to have to live in poverty and of course now there are still parts of Liverpool that live in poverty, but back then it used to be a lot worse. there was a massive gap between the poor and the rich. The two couldn't mix. This was also due to the government, but with the help of the yearly election the government improved, increasing the help with the poverty. Of course unfortunately there are still parts of Liverpool that are poor. In the 1960's there were still many 'slum' buildings, council buildings. This is where the Johnston's lived. The council housings were the 'ruff' estate where single mothers would live and bring up children/ poor families. The Johnston's end up moving to the Countryside, Mrs Johnston had to do this because the housings she lived in were all being knocked down. Mrs Johnston saw this as a great opportunity, as shes finally away from what everyone hated, and looked down on her for. In 1970 something really drastic happened leaving many people unemployed. The docs began to close down. The docs provided Liverpool's greatest income. People were left without work, as the country's unemployment record reached its worst level in 50 years!

Accent:

There are two accents in Blood Brothers, but the accent in Liverpool is called Scouse. There are many different and unique accents in England but this may be the most distinct. Scouse is a pretty strong accent (It was hard to learn haha). Liverpool is known for the port, a lot of the people Liverpool traded with were from Ireland and Wales, this is a reason why the accent is the way it is, they all kind of mixed.  In the 19th century there was a very popular dish called lobscouse. This is a stew, it was so popular because of how cheap it was. Because everyone knew how much people from Liverpool loved this dish they started calling them "Scousers". Of course not everyone had such a strong accent, it really depends what part of Liverpool you are brought up in.

The other accent in Blood Brothers is relatively posh. The people with this accent were Mrs Lyons and Eddie. Willy Russel did this so that he could really show the difference between the upper and lower class.
